Pudendal Nerve Function as a Predictor of Female Sexual Function with Sacral Neuromodulation

Objective:
To evaluate for changes in the electrophysiologic properties of the
pudendal nerve after InterStim® neuromodulation and how these
changes relate both to clinical response to the treatment and any
changes in sexual function.
Methods:
Women will be recruited for this prospective cohort study at a
single university clinic from a population scheduled to undergo
InterStim® neuromodulation for treatment of overactive bladder
and/or urinary retention. Pudendal nerve terminal motor latencies
(PNTML) will be measured. Clinical outcomes and sexual function
will be assessed via questionnaires and voiding diaries. All
assessments will occur before and after InterStim®
neuromodulation. Changes in PNTML will be correlated with
changes in clinical outcomes and sexual function.
Results:
PNTML may improve in response to InterStim® neuromodulation
and may correlate with improvement in clinical response of urinary
symptoms and female sexual function.
Conclusions:
InterStim® may play a role in the improvement of pudendal nerve
function and female sexual function.
